In the world of business, networking is one of the most valuable tools for advertising services. I have attended many business related events where the main purpose was to “hear and be heard.” I have stood and watched the best of the best and the worst of the worst.
The best of the best will acknowledge you with a smile and express how nice it is to see you. If the person knows you well, he/she will ask about your life… perhaps remembering something you mentioned during your last encounter. All this will happen before business is ever mentioned. When you start discussing business, they will give you their undivided attention.
The worst of the worst will corner you so that you can’t escape, shove a business card practically up your nose and remind you that you haven’t sent him/her any leads in ages. When you attempt to get a word in edgewise, they will not hear a word you say because they are busy looking over your shoulder for their next victim.
Networking is a great selling tool but the way that you approach people can make them look forward to your encounters or cringe when they see you and dash for the door!
