Young people often ask me for help selling themselves to prospective employers. The competition is tough out there and any ideas for standing out are always appreciated. Here are a few simple suggestions that can make a world of difference.
How can you make a great first impression? Meticulous personal hygiene is mandatory along with special attention to choice of clothing, (better to be a little overdressed than too casual) accessories (less is best) and most importantly… clean, polished shoes. An employer doesn’t care if you wear designer clothes…it’s the overall picture they will remember.
Great eye contact is very important. Be a good listener and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If something negative is brought up ex: your lack of experience in a specific area…point out one of your strengths. Self confidence is a very appealing quality and can score you big points.
Most importantly, relax and be yourself. Let the real you… shine through!
